The Three Lawrence Brothers: Leo, Ethan, and Eli

Growing up together in Los Angeles, the three of us have always held to a practice of working together, communicating with each other, and teaching one another. We each had strengths in different areas and as a result were regularly collaborating, bringing our individual contributions together to creatively solve problems. As we’ve developed in our respective academic careers, we’ve gone on to specialize in our own disciplines. Leo is a working visual artist, writer, and teacher with a B.A. from UCLA, Eli is a budding researcher and pre-med graduate with a degree in biochemistry from UCSD, and Ethan is a composer with a degree in Musicology from UCSB. Combined, we offer teaching services for a variety of subjects. We value mentorship, patience, strong work ethic, and the power of belief. We have experience working with students of all ages and levels from kindergarten to college, and welcome challenges as opportunities to learn and grow.

We look forward to working with you.

Warmly,

L, L, & L

Leo Lawrence

I am a graduate from the UCLA School of Art, where I studied under such artists as Lari Pittman, Barbara Kruger, and Mary Kelly. I have an extensive education in visual arts, academic writing, creative writing, visual and lingual semiotics, rhetoric, and art theory. I value mentorship, patience, work ethic, and the power of belief. I believe an arts education (both in visual and literary arts) is immensely important, not just a means to expression, but also as therapy, in understanding different modes of communication, and developing new ways of thinking. I am a teacher, visual artist, musician, and writer. I in terms of art education, my expertise includes drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, video editing, adobe photoshop, and illustrator. In regards to English, Literature, and academic writing instruction, I help structure written works in essay form, creative writing, and poetry, understanding and analyzing literary texts (close-reading), constructing a strong thesis, personal statement applications for college (in the beginning steps of interviewing the student, helping them to create a statement that feels honest, unique, and expressive, and editing statements in later stages). Expressing oneself through art and language is invaluable. Guiding another to find their voice, whether it be with words or paint, is a process I have always enjoyed doing. I’ve taught students of all ages and academic levels, welcome whatever your learning needs may be, and am eager to work together on what projects you need guidance with.

Eli Lawrence

I’m a recent graduate from UC San Diego, where I graduated cum laude with a BS in Biochemistry and Cellular biology. My interests include public health and research, and I love to teach. I currently work as an ACT/SAT and AP Biology, Physics, and Chemistry tutor. In addition, I was also an instructional assistant for an upper division metabolic biochemistry course. One of my favorite aspects of learning new concepts and topics is being able to pass on the torch of knowledge to those who come after me. As the old med school adage goes, watch one, do one, teach one. After many years of learning, I'm ready to share my passion and joy in understanding the mechanisms behind life's greatest mysteries.

As someone who loves giving back to my community, I worked as a Pathmaker Intern at Palomar Hospital, Escondido for almost two years. I have also started an organization that provides free tutoring to families who have been financially and emotionally impacted by COVID-19. At the UC San Diego School of Medicine, I work in a genomics research lab that studies high-altitude populations and the human response to low oxygen. I am also currently involved in several studies investigating the physiological and molecular mechanisms involved in the pathology of COVID-19. I have been on several publications in peer-reviewed journals and soon plan to apply to MD/PhD programs abroad. In my downtime, I love to hike, draw, and play the guitar. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions on my offered subjects, college applications or mentoring, or desire for a lesson!

Ethan Lawrence

I am an experienced piano player with 12 years of formal instruction and a graduate of the University of California Santa Barbara, with a B.A. in Western Music Studies. Composing and playing music has brought a great deal of magic and fulfillment to my life, and it is both a serious endeavor and a joy to share the wonderful gifts it has to offer with others. I have studied a wide range of historical, theoretical, and analytical topics relating to Instrumental Western Art Music, particularly in the Classical and Romantic periods. My primary emphasis at UCSB was music composition, theory, and orchestration. I write and arrange music for a variety of forms and instrumentations, from three voice piano fugues in the Baroque style to full orchestral arrangements and compositions with more modern sensibilities. For my senior project I wrote a series of four solo piano works that were largely programmatic in nature, following the tragic tale of a deposed Count and his somber descent from the world of grace and nobility. My interest in studying composition was sparked by my love for compelling film scores by the likes of Bernard Herrman, Ennio Morricone, Michael Giacchino, Joe Hisaishi, and Ryuichi Sakamoto. I also am invested in Rock, Pop, and Jazz orchestration, and have experience writing Pop compositions and lyrics. While I believe we are always learning and growing as musicians, I am grateful to be in the position to share what knowledge I’ve acquired with students, and to guide them on their musical journeys to whatever genres and destinations it leads them. Apart from music, I have a deep love for reading and writing fiction. Ever since my dad began reading night time stories such as Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, Jack London’s The Call of the Wild, and Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea, to my brothers and I at a young age, I’ve become increasingly captivated and enchanted by the wonders that fiction has to offer. Classic literature has always particularly interested me and good books have been some of my closest companions for as long as I can remember. Similarly, I have always enjoyed writing and its singular ability to convey deep and nuanced meaning. Like music, writing is another form of expression that I’d like to share with students.
