FAQs

How can I learn effectively through my computer while schools are shut down or at half-capacity?

As you grow older you quickly learn how much of the professional world is conducted through a screen. While nothing beats in person learning, there is something to be said on the benefit of remote learning. The ability to record classes, rewatch them and play them at twice or half speed, and share screens can be very effective ways to learn and teach. Especially with the increasing use and innovation of tablets, drawing and writing with a stylus or apple pencil is almost as easy as the real thing. Remote learning also allows students to learn on their own terms in their own environments. One of the greatest benefits of the internet age is the amount of supplemental information that can be accessed for free. There are countless Youtube videos on the pythagorean theorem and AP World history, while Khan Academy provides clips on just about every subject imaginable. The main message is the internet is the greatest and most powerful tool to those you know how to use it.

What makes an impactful and valuable learning experience?

What helps contribute to an impactful and valuable learning experience is when a mentor or teacher is aware and in tune with a student’s particular needs, and can tailor their teaching style to best suit the situation. If a teacher can connect with the student in a meaningful way, they can better keep them engaged and excited about the material.

Why invest in arts and music education?

While academic achievement is important for college applications, a student’s extracurricular activities and artistic interests may often make or break an admission. Colleges are looking to invest not just in scholastic contributions, but also cultural and artistic. Students who exhibit an aptitude and hunger for art and music add to the vibrancy of a college campus.

Many careers, not just those in professional art and music, value creative input, design, and modes of organization. Practicing art and music teach students to think and problem solve in inventive ways.  There are countless individuals with an arts education who have gone on to succeed in a variety of fields, and whose arts education proved a major asset.

Last but not least, art and music are powerful tools of expression, identity, and therapy.

What can I do in high school to increase my chances of getting into a good science college?

One of the best things you can do in high school is join a local research lab. If you're lucky enough to live near a university, it's almost guaranteed they have hundreds of labs conducting research in a variety of subjects and fields. Whether you're interested in anthropology or cancer, aerospace or psychology, there are numerous opportunities to get involved in the fields of your choice. Simply email the professors in charge of those labs and tell them you're interested in learning about their research and joining their lab as a volunteer. While the process may seem daunting, the spoils of joining a lab can not be overstated.

What is the difference between a tutor and a mentor?

Tutoring provides auxiliary support for already existing programs and assignments, while a mentor guides a mentee through a broader set of skills and philosophies, helping to build a foundation of empowerment and problem-solving so that students may grow to become independent.

Here at Lawrence Brothers Teaching Services, we pride ourselves on offering both tutoring and mentorship.
